VS5 pumps Introduction

VS5 pumps are vertical pumps in the API 610 standard category. These types of pumps are specially designed to transfer fluids from tanks, wells, and similar sources where access to the fluid from the surface is not possible. VS5 pumps are mainly used for pumping clean liquids or liquids with low solid particles.

Structure and design of VS5 pumps

Cantilever vertical pump: VS5 pumps are designed vertically and cantilever, meaning that the pump is immersed in the fluid without support at the end of the shaft. This design helps to avoid underwater bearings and problems caused by corrosive fluids.

Casing less: These pumps have no casing and instead have a long shaft and an impeller at the end of the shaft that is immersed in the fluid. The impeller is in direct contact with the fluid and pumps the fluid upwards.

Arrangement of bearings: Unlike VS4 pumps, which use intermediate bushings for maintenance, VS5 pumps usually have no bushings in the submerged part. This design helps to prevent damage to the bearings due to contact with corrosive or abrasive fluids.

Driving motor: The motor of these pumps is installed outside the fluid and above the pump. The long shaft transmits the engine power to the propeller.

Applications of VS5 pumps

Due to their special design, VS5 pumps are very suitable for applications that require pumping fluids from deep. These applications include:

Petrochemical and chemical industries: for conveying clean fluids or with low solid particles located in underground tanks or wells.

Power plants: for pumping cooling water, groundwater or similar fluids.

Water and Wastewater: For discharge of groundwater, rainwater, or low-hazard fluids.

Mining industry: to transfer slurries or fluids that need to be pumped from deep.

Features and benefits of VS5 pumps

Absence of submerged bearing: This feature reduces failures caused by corrosion and wear of bearings and increases the useful life of the pump.

Simple and reliable: the simple design without the need for a sheath and the use of a long shaft increases reliability and reduces the need for frequent repairs.

Less occupied space: due to being vertical, these pumps use less space than horizontal pumps.

Flexibility in installation: Due to the vertical and simple design, these pumps can be installed in different places and are suitable for a wide range of applications.

Disadvantages of VS5 pumps

Limitations in pumping fluids with high solid particles: These pumps are designed to pump clean fluids or with low solid particles and may have difficulty for pumping fluids with high solid particles.

Limitation in depth: The shaft length is limited and therefore these pumps are not suitable for applications that require pumping from big depths.

Maintenance costs: Although the design is simple, the long shaft and the need for precise alignment may require specialized maintenance.

With a vertical cantilever design and no submerged bearings, VS5 pumps are ideal for applications that require pumping fluids from deep. Due to their simple structure, high reliability, and easy maintenance, these pumps are used in various industries including petrochemical, power plants, and water and sewage. However, limitations such as the inability to pump fluids with large solid particles and depth limitations may be challenging in some applications.
